Mayors Fund - Call To Action
Mayors Fund - Call To Action

During the course of the Mayoral year, events will be organised by the Civic office, to which Mayor's and other Dignitaries from across Kent are invited, as well as local Thanet residents. The aim of these events is threefold:

  • To introduce visiting Mayors to Margate and what it has to offer.
  • To meet people from all walks of life in convivial settings and enjoy a fun occasion.
  • To raise funds for 'The Mayor's Fund'.

What happens to the Mayor's Fund?

All profits from events held are placed in a separate bank account.

Applications from local charities/organisations and occasionally individuals, are submitted to the Margate Charter Trustees, who will consider the applications at one of their regular meetings. The fund can support applications from organisations that are either in, or work in, one of the remaining Old Borough of Margate wards; Westbrook, Garlinge, Margate Central, Dane Valley, Salmestone, Cliftonville East and Cliftonville West. The Charter Trustees do require accounts in support of applications made. Sometimes, they will invite the applicant along to the Mayor’s Parlour to give a presentation on the work they are doing.

The allocation of the profit from the Mayor's Ball, is at the discretion of the Mayor for that year. For 2017-2018, the Mayor, Cllr Rosamund Dixon, has chosen the JET programme of Porchlight to be the recipient of the proceeds from the Ball. Porchlight works with homeless people and the JET programme helps the homeless improve their work prospects.

Last year, the Mayor's Fund supported:

  • The Parkinson Society
  • Kent Sea Cadets
  • Kent Army Cadets
  • Kent Air Cadets
  • Cliftonville Residents Association
  • Oasis Women's Refuge
  • Quarterdeck
  • Porchlight
  • Hi-Kent
  • St Anthony's School
  • Bandicoots
