The Mayor of Margate, Cllr John Edwards, has presented Oasis Domestic Abuse Service with £480 to help train their volunteers.
Thanet based charity Oasis Domestic Abuse Service has its only charity shop based in Margate Old Town. "The shop finally gives Oasis a face for people to connect with. Having spent 20 years providing support to victims of domestic abuse in Thanet, we now have our shop to raise the extra income we need to maintain the high standard of care we give to those we support. Oasis are fortunate to have the support of some brilliant and dedicated volunteers, and this funding will go towards providing existing and new volunteers with training, enabling them gain skills in retail and to speak knowledgably about the Oasis cause. This helps them with future employment and allows them to have knowledge of domestic violence issues that impact so many in the Thanet community and beyond," says Hazel Eddy from the organisation.
The shop is currently seeking volunteers who can give a few hours at weekends once a month.
"Our volunteers act as ambassadors for our work - giving them an understanding of our services is so important. They are able to raise awareness of domestic abuse as an issue - with two women a week being murdered by a current or ex-partner in the UK, we hope this will be another step towards making the local community more aware of domestic abuse issues and help keep victims safe with the knowledge that is support available for those that need it. It is also important to us to give back to the volunteers that use their spare time to help ," said The Oasis Shop manager Kathy Westlake.
