The Mayor's Charter Day Guided Tour - 30 Jul 26

What a wonderful evening we had last night celebrating 169 years since Margate gained its freedom from Dover and became a proud Charter Town! 

The Mayor was joined by friends, old and new, who had travelled from across Kent to hear just some of Margate's fascinating history and witness one of the town's spectacular Turner sunsets.

The tour ended with a welcome refreshment at Barnacles, courtesy of Thorley Taverns.

Our tour guide only skimmed the surface of Margate's rich and diverse history, leaving many guests wanting to return and discover even more—which was the plan all along! After all, who wouldn't want to come back and experience everything this vibrant town has to offer?

Next year, Margate will no longer be a Charter Town, as the new Town Council will have been elected. While this marks the end of one important chapter in the town's history, it also marks the beginning of an exciting new one. It felt fitting to celebrate and reflect on this historic milestone.
